MADEMOISELLE (2017)

Written in 4 days of isolation in Paris, Mademoiselle is Belle Chen's most personal work to date.

Whereas Listen, London (2014) and Mediterranean Sounds (2016) captured and recreated observations of specific locations and people, Mademoiselle captures a series of emotional states, set against the Parisian soundscapes.

Using classical music idiom as the starting point, this new work ultimately breaks down the parameters through sounds, improvisation, and electronica... not out of disrespect for classical music, but out of the need to communicate more precisely the specific and deep emotions of the story Belle wished to recreate.

The result is cinematic, raw, vulnerable, and very true to the heart. Underlying the many shades of emotions recreated is a deep notion of "saudade."
